New England Surf at MYSA State Cup 2023
New England Surf was well represented at this year’s State Cup Finals weekend on May 13-14. Going into the weekend, we had 2 teams (U12 Girls Navy and U14 Girls Navy) who already secured their spot into the finals on Sunday and 7 more teams who were in the semi-final match on Saturday.
Saturday’s semi-final games were full of excitement. Our U16 Boys Navy went into penalties with Real Boston FC and came out on top! JD Munro, goalie of the 2007B, carried his team with two huge saves in the penalty shoot-out. NE Surf U18 Boys Navy won their game against Seacoast United 2-0, while the U18 Boys Sky lost 1-0 to Juventus Academy. Our U15 and U16 Girls Navy teams made a big statement with a 7-1 win over Boston Bolts and a 8-0 win over Juventus Academy. Unfortunately, the U16 Girls Sky team fell to Seacoast United with a 5-0 loss. Finishing up the day strong, the U17 Girls Navy team defeated FC Stars 4-2! New England Surf went into Sunday’s championship games with 7 teams competing for first place.
The U16 Boys Navy defeated Juventus Academy 3-1 to clinched their trophy. Our U18 Boys Navy who also played against Juventus Academy came out on top with a 1-0 win. The U12 Girls Navy had a stand-out performance scoring 9 goals to lead them to victory against a goalless Liverpool team. The U14 Girls Navy fought a hard game, but ultimately loss 2-3 to Legacy Soccer Club. Our U15 Girls Navy also shoutout their competitors, SFC, 9-0. The U16 Girls Navy had a tough game against Seacoast United and ultimately fell 3-4. The U17 Girls Navy came out on top with a 3-0 win over Liverpool!
This year was especially exciting for our 2008 Girls State Navy and 2005 Boys State Navy teams, who are now back-to-back-to-back State Cup Champions.
In the U18 Boys Navy game, Ethan Sullivan was the difference maker securing the team’s only goal. Coach Jake Beverlin said, “I was very proud of how the team played today. We came out and were the better team. They deserved the win and I am happy for them.”
The U15 Girls Navy team won their third consecutive championship with a surplus of goals. After winning the semi-final game 7-1, they won the final 9-0. Nicole Proia was the stand out player in the final, scoring 5 goals and taking home the game MVP award.
