New England Surf - Pre-Season Camp

How to Prepare for New England Surf Pre-Season Camp | Player Guide

August 20, 2026

New England Surf Pre-Season Camp is almost here! Next week, New England Surf players will return to the field for important days of training, preparation, team building, and soccer development ahead of the new season.

Pre-season camp is different from a typical summer soccer camp. After a few months filled with vacations, camps, tournaments, family time, and different playing schedules, these four days are an opportunity to bring Surf Nation back together and start preparing for the season ahead.

Players don’t need to arrive in midseason form. The goal is to come prepared, healthy, excited to compete, and ready to get better each day.

Here are some simple ways players can prepare for New England Surf Pre-Season Camp.

Start Getting Touches on the Ball

One of the easiest ways to prepare for a soccer pre-season camp is simply to spend time with the ball.

In the days leading up to camp, try to get 20–30 minutes of touches whenever possible. You don’t need a full field or an organized training session. A backyard, driveway, local park, or small patch of grass can work.

Players can focus on:

Dribbling with both feet
Inside and outside touches
Turns and changes of direction
Juggling
Passing against a wall or with a teammate
Receiving and first-touch control
Short bursts of ball mastery at game speed

Keep it fun and simple. The objective isn’t to squeeze an entire summer of training into one week. It’s about getting comfortable with the ball again so players arrive on Monday ready to build from there.

Get Your Body Ready for Soccer

Pre-season camp shouldn’t be the first time a player has sprinted or changed direction in several weeks.

During the week before camp, gradually introduce soccer movements back into your routine. Light jogging, short accelerations, dynamic movement, changes of direction, and playing small-sided soccer with friends are all good options. Avoid suddenly trying to do hours of conditioning right before camp.

A good youth soccer pre-season is about gradually preparing the body for the demands of training. Players should arrive feeling fresh and ready to compete, not exhausted from trying to get fit at the last minute.

Hydration Starts Before the First Whistle

Late August in New England can still bring plenty of heat and humidity, making hydration an important part of pre-season preparation.

Don’t wait until Monday morning to start drinking water.  A simple habit can make a difference: keep your water bottle with you throughout the day.

Players should focus on staying consistently hydrated in the days leading up to camp and throughout the four-day training period. Bring a filled water bottle to every session and continue drinking fluids after training.

Arriving properly hydrated allows players to focus on soccer instead of trying to catch up once training has already started.

Fuel Your Body for Training

Pre-season means more activity, which means players need enough energy to train and recover.

Start each camp day with breakfast and continue eating balanced meals throughout the day. Meals should include a combination of carbohydrates, protein, fruits and vegetables, along with plenty of fluids.

Before training, stick with familiar foods that you know sit well while playing soccer.

After camp, refueling is just as important. Eating and hydrating after training helps the body recover so players can return the following day ready for another session. Four consecutive days of soccer can add up. Recovery between sessions matters.

Get Back Into a Good Sleep Routine

Summer schedules can get a little loose, and that’s part of summer.

But as New England Surf Pre-Season Camp approaches, start moving bedtime and wake-up time closer to your normal school and soccer routine. Sleep plays an important role in physical recovery, concentration, reaction time, and energy.

Getting enough sleep each night will help players recover and make the most of every day at camp.

Check Your Soccer Gear Before Camp

Don’t wait until Sunday night to discover that last season’s cleats don’t fit anymore.

Growing players should especially check their soccer gear ahead of time. A pair of cleats that fit perfectly at the beginning of summer might feel very different by late August.

Before camp, check your:

Cleats
Shin guards
Soccer socks
Training gear
Water bottle
Soccer backpack
Sunscreen
Goalkeeper gloves and equipment, if applicable

Getting everything organized ahead of time makes Monday morning much easier.

Come Ready to Compete and Reconnect

Pre-season isn’t only about fitness and technical work. It’s also about bringing teams back together.

Returning players get the chance to reconnect with teammates and coaches, while new Surf players can begin developing relationships and becoming part of their team.

Say hello to someone new. Encourage a teammate. Compete hard during a drill and then give your opponent a high five afterward. Listen to your coaches. Bring positive energy to the field.

Those moments help build the culture and community that connect players throughout Surf Nation.

Don’t Worry About Being Perfect on Day One

Your first touch might get away from you. Your timing may be slightly off. You might feel tired sooner than expected. That’s exactly why pre-season exists.

Players shouldn’t judge themselves based on their first training session back. Instead, look for progress throughout the week.

Can you make your decisions a little faster on Tuesday? Does your first touch feel sharper on Wednesday? Are you communicating more with your teammates by Thursday?

Those small improvements are what pre-season is all about.

So, how should you prepare for soccer season?
