2009 Navy Make History at MLS NEXT Regional Qualifiers
There are moments that define a team – and others that help move an entire club forward.
For New England Surf’s 2009 Navy Boys, what happened in New Jersey last month, from April 17–19, was both.
They arrived at the MLS NEXT Regional Qualifiers with a clear objective: finish as one of the top two teams and earn a place at the MLS NEXT Cup in Utah. Only the finalists would advance. There was no margin for error.
But this story didn’t start in New Jersey.
“Resilience is the word that defines this group,” said Head Coach Adam Kelley.
The first half of their league season hadn’t always gone their way. Results didn’t always reflect the work being put in. But the group never drifted. They stayed committed: to the process, to each other, and to what they were building.
“They continued to believe… showing up every day committed to improving and pushing each other forward.”
That belief carried into the tournament.
They opened with a strong 2–0 win over Seacoast United Bedford – a performance that set the tone. But at this level, momentum is always tested. A narrow 1–0 loss to Blau Weiss Gottschee followed.
It was a moment that could have shifted everything.
It didn’t.
Instead, the response came with clarity and intent. A dominant 10–0 win over New York Rush to close the group stage – not just a result, but a statement. Confidence restored. Focus sharpened.
They were moving forward.
“When we arrived at MLS Regionals, our focus was simple: take it one game at a time, broken down into 10-minute intervals, and win each segment.”
That mentality showed when the margins got tighter.
In the quarterfinal, patience and belief carried them through. A late goal secured a 1–0 win over IFA New England – a moment that required composure and trust.
Then came the semifinal.
An early goal against Boston Bolts gave them the edge. What followed was discipline, organization, and collective focus – a group fully in control of the moment.
Captain Eoghan summed it up simply:
“We scored early and managed the game.”
Head Coach Kelley added:
“That mentality drove everything we did – battling for one another, staying disciplined, and making ourselves incredibly difficult to break down.”
Across the group stage and knockout rounds, they conceded just once. One goal.
“To concede just one goal… speaks to the commitment and togetherness of this team.”
And with the final whistle in the semifinal, it became official.
2009 Navy had done it.
The first team in New England Surf history to qualify for the MLS NEXT Cup.
A historic achievement – but more than that, a reflection of who this group is.
“They set a standard through their work ethic, mentality, and belief in each other.”
For the players, it’s a moment earned through years of work.
For the families, it’s a reflection of every early morning, every drive, every commitment made along the way.
And for the club, it’s a step forward – a new benchmark for what’s possible.
Utah awaits.
