Surf Cup International Spain

The Surf Select program brings together the most talented players and coaches from all of Surf Nation to compete together under the Surf banner at the highest levels. Last week, these players came together in Salou, Spain to take part in our first ever Surf Cup International event. The tournament hosted a variety of top European clubs including FC Barcelona, PSG, Benfica, RCD Espanyol and many more.

This event had a strong New England Surf presence, with a total of seven of our players showcasing their talents against some of the best youth players in Europe. On the boy’s side, Zackary Chaib represented us as part of the 2009 squad, competing against Vilnius Football Academy (Lithuania), Gimnàstic de Tarragona (Spain) and RCD Mallorca (Spain) in the group stage. Surf then met CF Reus (Spain) in their Quarterfinal matchup, where their journey ultimately came to an end. Zackary played a pivotal role in the squad, particularly in the 09’s 6-0 victory against Vilnius.

On the girl’s side, we had Chloe Leng, Madison Mangino, Nicole Proia, and Mattea Hermann represent NE Surf as part of the 2008 squad, who nearly reached the finals after losing to RCD Espanyol on penalty kicks. All four of our girls made a huge impact throughout the tournament, going undefeated in the group stage against Manu Lanzarote, Atlético de Madrid, and UE Cornellà ( all Spain) and finding the back of the net on multiple occasions. The 2009 squad also saw some familiar faces, with Audrey Schleimer and Helen Baranano both taking part in the event. Helen proved to be an integral part of the midfield 3, while Audrey scored two goals to give the 09 girls a crucial win against CE Sabadell (Spain) in the group stage.

We cannot stress enough how proud we are of our seven players who travelled to Spain, and displayed a brand of soccer that NE Surf is proud to represent. Their hard work and dedication to the sport over the past year has most certainly paid off, with all seven of them proving to be key impact players for their respective Surf Select squads.
