Why New England Surf Summer Camps Are About More Than Soccer
New England Surf Summer Camps are about much more than just soccer.
Every summer, players across Massachusetts come together to learn, compete, make friends, and build confidence in an environment designed to help every child enjoy the game while continuing to develop.
Whether a player is just starting their soccer journey or already competing at a high level, Surf camps are built to create an experience that is welcoming, challenging, and fun for everyone involved.
According to Camp Director Alex Vokes Macpherson, that balance is at the center of everything the club does during the summer months.
“Our camps are open to all players, at any stage of their development,” said Vokes Macpherson. “Our professional coaches implement a curriculum that maximizes enjoyment, familiarity with the ball, and player development.”
Creating an Environment Players Want to Return To
One of the biggest priorities at New England Surf Summer Camps is making sure players feel comfortable and excited from the moment they arrive each day.
“What we want players to feel most is welcomed,” Vokes Macpherson explained. “Training groups are designed to maximize enjoyment and player development, so every attendee is appropriately engaged and challenged by the environment.”
That approach has helped create a camp culture families continue returning to year after year.
Parents know their players are entering a positive and supportive environment with coaches who care deeply about both development and experience.
“Our families know that when they drop off their soccer player at camp, they will receive phenomenal coaching and support, have a lot of fun, and develop their skills,” said Vokes Macpherson.
Balancing Development, Competition, and Fun
Surf camps are intentionally designed to combine player development with competition and enjoyment throughout the week.
“Our summer camp curriculum focuses on a unique and intentional balance between development, competition, and enjoyment,” said Vokes Macpherson. “Every player will be appropriately challenged, with like-minded players, to maximize their development as a player and to nurture relationships with friends, new and old.”
Players leave camp with more confidence, improved technical ability, and lasting memories from the summer experience.
“We consistently hear from families that players had a tremendous experience at our camps,” he added. “They work with knowledgeable and friendly coaches, learn new skills while improving old ones, and compete alongside their friends.”
Many players even choose to attend multiple camp weeks throughout the summer.
What Makes Surf Camps Different?

For Vokes Macpherson, one of the biggest things separating Surf camps from others in the area is the coaching staff.
“Our coaching staff are all professional, experienced, and knowledgeable coaches,” he explained. “This year, every single coach throughout our events are returning summer camp coaches or New England Surf coaching staff.”
That consistency helps ensure a high-quality experience across every camp location and age group.
“The level of preparation and care they bring ensures that our players receive the best-of-the-best experience.”
Bringing the World Cup Spirit to Summer Camp
One of the highlights of NES Summer Camps is the special weekly “World Cup Day” every Thursday.
Players will be split into national teams and compete throughout the day while embracing the spirit of the global game.
“This is the first time in a generation that our World Cup-themed day will coincide with hosting the World Cup in Boston, throughout the USA, Mexico, and Canada,” said Vokes Macpherson. “We couldn’t be more excited to cultivate a lifelong passion for the sport.”
Players are also encouraged to wear their country’s colors, create posters, and learn more about the teams they represent.
“Soccer is the only sport played by every nation in the world,” he said. “It is an opportunity to broaden horizons and connect through a shared love of the sport.”
The goal is to make the experience about more than soccer alone – creating moments of creativity, community, and excitement that players will remember long after the summer ends.
